A Word from the MD

For 2018 we have produced another tasty and exciting selection of beers to be enjoyed throughout the year - and if 2017 is anything to go by we'll have a lot of happy drinkers.

2017 was a record year for JW Lees and despite the difficult market, cask and smooth volumes at JW Lees are in growth, which is testament to the quality of the beers, the success of our brewers' enthusiasm for brewing new beers and the great support we have received from our customers and colleagues.

When Boddingtons was no longer brewed in Manchester we felt that there was a place for a new nationally recognisable iconic Manchester beer. Based on 'British Jewels', a seasonal beer that we brewed to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen in 2012, we developed a full bodied, refreshing cask beer that we named Manchester Pale Ale. The impact of MPA has been incredible, customer feedback has been fantastic and the volumes we are producing prove that we've got the proposition right - Mark Radcliffe and Bez from the Happy Mondays helped us launch it at the launch event on 17th April 2013. We're seeing a new generation of JW Lees drinkers who are discovering cask ale and avoiding lager.

A Word from the Head Brewer

The most exciting time of the year is developing the new seasonal ales, it's when I open up the recipe book and look for beers that I have always wanted to brew - then, after some titivation and a few pints, for research purposes, we agree the beer and let loose ideas about names and pump clip designs.

Some years we find ourselves with a beer that is so good that it needs to be added to our permanent range, and last year we found ourselves launching Manchester Pale Ale. MPA is an exciting addition, it has worked in terms of improving the breadth of range, but it has also broadened our appeal to younger cask ale drinkers who are prepared to give light ale a try.

Combining innovation with 186 years of brewing heritage and four pure ingredients makes JW Lees beer special and I am pleased to say that Moonraker had another award winning year.
